The 2024 Oscar nominations reflect a very good year in film, one packed with eccentric storytelling on an epic scale. As expected, Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, and Barbie were among the most recognized, with Oppenheimer picking up 13 nominations across all major categories, including Best Picture, Director, Lead and Supporting Actor, and Writing.
Poor Things received 11 nominations, while Killers of the Flower Moon received 10, including Martin Scorsese for Director, Lily Gladstone for Lead Actress, Robert De Niro for Supporting Actor, and Robbie Robertson for his score. Bradley Cooper’s Maestro also received seven nominations (including Makeup and Hairstyling), while the widely liked The Holdovers picked up five.
In the music categories, perennial nominee Diane Warren once again made the list with her original song for the Hulu film Flamin’ Hot, while Barbie’s “I’m Just Ken” and “What Was I Made For?” received two slots. The other nominees were Scott George’s “Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People)” from Killers of the Flower Moon and “It Never Went Away,” from the Jon Batiste documentary American Symphony. In original score, Consequence Composer of 2023 Ludwig Göransson’s work for Oppenheimer will be going up against the music from Flower Moon, Poor Things, American Fiction, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. (Congrats to John Williams on his 54th nomination.)
Foreign cinema also had a strong presence outside the International Feature Film category, which isn’t always a common occurrence. Yet Anatomy of a Fall received five nominations (including one for Sandra Hüller’s exemplary lead performance), as did Jonathan Glazer’s haunting The Zone of Interest (which also happens to star Hüller). In addition, the twice-nominated Past Lives, while not technically a foreign film, was shot partially in Korea/Korean and the extraordinary Godzilla Minus One received a visual effects nod— proving that The Academy truly has gotten over its fear of subtitles.
Picking up stray nominations include Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One for sound and visual effects, Ridley Scott’s Napoleon for costume design, production design, and visual effects, and Hayao Miyazaki’s most recent masterpiece, The Boy and the Heron, for Animated Feature. As always, there are snubs and disappointments to discuss, but a strong year in film usually means a strong year in nominations, and 2024 is no exception.
Below are the nominees. The 96th Academy Awards will be handed out on Sunday, March 10th. Jimmy Kimmel will once again host.
