Bradley Cooper Is Gentle While the Makeup Team Goes Hard in Trailer for Maestro: Watch
Maestro (Netflix)

Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan are as gentle as can be while the makeup team goes hard in the official teaser trailer for Maestro.

A biopic of the great American composer Leonard Bernstein (Cooper, who also directs), Maestro chronicles the musical titan’s decades-long partnership with his wife Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein (Mulligan). The trailer begins in black-and-white when the pair are young and perhaps even digitally de-aged — Cooper in particular looks unusually baby-faced in some of these scenes, especially around the eyes. We also see them in vibrant color and heavy prosthetics when they have grown old together, in a time period that is likely the late 1980s or 1990 towards the end of Bernstein’s life.

The theme of the trailer is love at its warmest and most unconditional. The couple’s well-documented problems are not mentioned, though the script from Cooper and Josh Singer will no doubt touch on these subjects. As Felicia wrote to Leonard in a letter (housed at the Library of Congress), “You are a homosexual and may never change let’s relax in the knowledge that neither of us is perfect and forget about being HUSBAND AND WIFE in such strained capital letters…”

Maestro co-stars Maya Hawke, Matt Bomer, Sarah Silverman, Josh Hamilton, Scott Ellis, Gideon Glick, Sam Nivola, Alexa Swinton, and Miriam Shor. Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg helped produce. It will play in select theaters November 22nd before swooping onto Netflix on December 20th. Check out the trailer below.
